Romantic Danube Cruise Reviews 2024 Budapest to Regensburg Viking®

viking river cruise review

With our luggage taken off the ship and loaded onto buses, we only had to bring along our carry-on bags. While we were in Regensburg, Viking Lif sailed from Straubing to Regensburg to meet us. This was a chance for passengers who simply yearned for a quiet day onboard to just cruise. The baroque interior is dazzling, the library has over 80,000 medieval manuscripts and several hidden doors.

Viking River Cruises

As a solo traveler and someone who doesn’t fly, it was a challenge to figure out how to get to Budapest. After one night in Munich, Germany, it was an eight hour train ride to Budapest. Budapest, Hungary, on the beautiful and sometimes-blue Danube, has so much to experience. The views, the food, the staff...I couldn’t have asked for more during my much-anticipated vacation to China.

He also mentioned the referral program which saved us $100 per person just for knowing someone who previously went on a Viking cruise. People who write reviews have ownership to edit or delete them at any time, and they’ll be displayed as long as an account is active. Just received an email from Viking informing us that half of the Xmas markets we were suppose to visit will not be open. They marketed the cruise as a Xmas market cruise which is why we booked it. We get the email 3 days prior to our trip and they knew from the beginning the markets would not open until early December. A clear case of bait and switch and will cause us to never cruise with them again.

Highlights of Our Budapest Tours

If you want to be pampered for two weeks and make wonderful new friends, then Viking is the cruise line for you. Viking advertises so heavily in the US that for some reason I hadn’t considered there to be other options. Cruisers also have the option of choosing to increase or decrease this amount, and/or provide tips directly to the staff with whom they interacted the most. This makes the process easy but also flexible for each passenger’s preference. Viking bills each passenger a set tip amount per day to be shared with all the staff.

Crystal River Cruises to Livestream Christening of New Ship

We mainly did the included excursions and the guides were very knowledgeable and interesting. All in all we were very happy people and have already booked our next ocean cruise with them. I decided to pass on the complimentary morning motor coach tour of the city and get some writing done.

Review of the Upstairs Deck on the Viking Dellling Ship

Most people on our cruise wore casual dresses or slacks with button down shirts for dinner. But by the end of our cruise, people were becoming more casual and showing up in jeans and shorts. It also made the tour group following the tour guide very quiet, which seemed to surprise people looking at the tour group walking down the street in silence. Everyone was listening to their headsets and not speaking to one another. The Viking cruise line has its own tour buses that will take you from location to location.

Everyone still has to be back on board at the same time, so for certain port stops, you would get much less time in town if you were part of the last disembarkation group. We did a fun tour of the wheelhouse and learned from the Captain that Viking ships utilize four propellers instead of a traditional rudder. Enjoying the comfort of a luxurious ship without worrying about transportation from town to town and only unpacking once. In the afternoon, we signed up for an optional tour to Colmar. Basel is an underrated tourist attraction and the third largest city in Switzerland. The town has a gorgeous Medieval center and plenty of world-class art museums.

Grand European Tour

In a nutshell, this one-off blog post about European river cruises is an extension of our passion for travel and exploration. This Viking River Cruise review serves as a bridge between two distinct travel passions, illustrating how each offers unique adventures and insights. It’s a way to diversify travel experiences, appealing to those who love the open road but are curious about the serenity and cultural richness offered by a river cruise. Also included is beer, wine and soda at lunch and dinner; these beverages cost extra any other time of the day. When I went on my cruise to Cuba, we received a group number each evening for the next day’s stop. That was a medium sized ship (roughly 500-1,000 passengers) and disembarking into town took about 2 hours, so depending on which group you were in.

Magnificent Mekong Cruise Reviews

Hope it changes with the cruise, but they have a lot of work to do in the front end to be given a top rating. To paraphrase, Lee said, “Pack your bags, we’re changing river ships in the morning”. As we made our way up the Danube, I started to watch the water’s edge.

With days so busy, evening entertainment has been kept to a minimum. In the course of two-weeks, we would cruise on three rivers; the Danube, Main and Rhine rivers. Along the way, Viking Lif had 12 scheduled cruise ports to visit before docking in Amsterdam.

I knew from past river cruises, if I saw tree trunks submerged and debris quickly flowing past us, it meant trouble. Tomorrow, our Grand European Tour river cruise would begin with a full day of sightseeing before we even got underway. Be sure to get travel insurance for your river cruise.

When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S. River cruising is all about the destinations visited, and excursion are, by far, the most popular Viking River activity. In all ports, passengers have at least one free sightseeing option, with several extra-fee choices as well. Onboard, there are few activities to engage in but the occasional onboard presentation (usually a lecture, or local dance or music troupe) draws a crowd. Evening music (typically a piano player) may or may not be popular depending on the crowd onboard. What I really liked was that there’s no pressure to stay with the tour.

Internet service is a slower than usual, as it’s satellite service on the river and therefore inherently slower. There’s less on-board entertainment (no nightclubs or casinos on board) but each evening people congregated in the lounge by the bar and Viking had an on-board pianist. River cruising is a much more intimate experience, with unreserved seating at meal times so you get to mix and mingle with almost everyone on board by the end (if you want!). We chose to do 2 optionals and on the other days, relaxed on board or went into town to explore on our own! It was a well-balanced pace and I truly felt “on vacation”. The nice thing about this stop is the ship can dock right into town, so you can join the tour or explore on your own.

The number one reason why I like river cruises so much is because you get to see many small towns and sights in a leisurely fashion. As part of the price of the cruise, you also get unlimited wine and beer with lunch and dinner. To note, only one red and one white wine selection and one beer option are available. These stayed the same the entire week so it’s not a lot of variety. They were definitely a better quality than you’d expect from a house beer or wine in the States, though. Even the light drizzle didn’t stop anyone from walking in the city center.
